PAN-Aadhaar Linking: Complete 2026 Guide

What is PAN-Aadhaar linking?

PAN-Aadhaar linking connects your Permanent Account Number with your Aadhaar record in the Income Tax Department's systems. For individuals covered by the applicable rules, Aadhaar has to be intimated against PAN in the prescribed manner. For new eligible PAN applicants, the linkage is handled during the application process.

Who needs to link PAN with Aadhaar?

The Income Tax Department says individuals who were allotted PAN on or before 1 July 2017 and are eligible to obtain Aadhaar are required to intimate their Aadhaar number. Notified exempt categories are treated differently, so do not assume that every taxpayer has the same requirement.

Best practice: If you are unsure whether you are exempt, check the latest Income Tax Department guidance rather than relying on a third-party website.

What happens if PAN is not linked?

A PAN that is required to be linked but is not linked can become inoperative. The Income Tax Department lists consequences including withholding of certain refunds and interest and higher rates for tax deduction or collection in specified situations.

An inoperative PAN is not the same as a cancelled PAN. The department says it can become operative after Aadhaar is intimated and the applicable fee is paid.

Is there a fee for late linking?

The current Income Tax Department guidance states that a ₹1,000 fee continues to apply to make an inoperative PAN operative by intimating Aadhaar. The official portal should always be treated as the final authority for the amount and payment flow shown for your case.

Payment warning: Start from the official Income Tax e-Filing portal. Do not pay a random website or person who claims to “activate” your PAN.

How to check PAN-Aadhaar link status

  1. Open the official Income Tax e-Filing portal.
  2. Open the Link Aadhaar Status service.
  3. Enter PAN and Aadhaar as requested.
  4. Submit and read the result shown by the government portal.

The result from the official portal is the meaningful status. A format checker can only identify obvious formatting mistakes.

What if linking fails?

Name, date of birth or gender mismatches can cause a linking request to fail. Correct the relevant record through the appropriate official process and then retry. If PAN and Aadhaar are already connected to different records, the Income Tax Department advises contacting the Jurisdictional Assessing Officer where necessary.

How long does linking take?

The Income Tax Department's current user manual notes that if a fee has been paid but payment details are not yet verified on the portal, applicants may need to wait around 4–5 working days before submitting the linking request.

Safety tips

  • Use the official incometax.gov.in domain for linking.
  • Never share an Aadhaar OTP with an agent or website operator.
  • Do not upload Aadhaar/PAN documents to an unknown checker.
  • Do not apply for a second PAN because an existing PAN is inoperative.
